JANUARY 2008
    UPCOMING EVENTS:

Jan 13 Lite Flyers meeting. 2pm, Faribault airport

    December Meeting notes:

We had 10 members in attendance at the December meeting. Bob Powell reported that he
got his Light Sport airworthiness certificates issued to both of his planes. He has a
Quicksilver Sprint II, and a Quicksilver GT400. He said the inspection went well. The only issues were
that he had to change the N numbers on one of the planes. Due to the single surface fabric on the
rudder, the numbers were unreadable if light showed thru, as he had the numbers located at the
    same location on both sides.
Craig Skunberg reported that he was almost ready for inspection on his Quicksilver
    II, and 2 Mariners.
There was also some discussion about ski installation practices. Tim Bjork was
preparing toinstall skis on his Kolb.

    The New Year Is Here:

It’s now the beginning of a new year. As such, it’s renewal time for your 2008 membership.
Timely renewal is important to meet the club expenses such as EAA national dues and
insurance. Please bring your renewal to the January meeting, or mail it to Bob Powell
at the address listed at the top of this newsletter.

APRIL 2008
     UPCOMING EVENTS:

April 14 Lite Flyers meeting. 1pm, Faribault airport (note time change!) back to 2pm

    March Meeting notes:

We had 9 members in attendance at the meeting. Scott Blixt reported on the Wisconsin
safety seminar. Jewell Ness came home with several door prizes that were given away
at the seminar, including a color GPS and a set of ultralight skis. Scott also
reported that there is a safety seminar coming up April 5, in Wisconsin, across the
river from Redwing, MN that he’s planning to attend. Larry Olson passed around some
photos of his plane and a set of skis he made for it. Ray Seifert also passed around
a couple photos showing the progress on his CH601. Del Voegele passed around a photo
showing his wife taxiing his 404 biplane.

    April meeting:

I received a phone call from Dick Schultz, air boss for the Faribault Air
Fest/Balloon Rally. He wants us to participate in the event to help promote our club.
He’s asked for our input as far as what capacity we’d like to participate. (ex.
Static display, flying demonstrations, etc.) I explained to him that the best weather
for ultralight flying is early morning and late afternoon. He seemed open to allowing
us to fly for an hour or so in the morning, after the balloons take off, and in the
evening, after the balloons take off. He said the air will be busy most of the time,
so he didn’t think it would work out well to have us flying all day. Saturday morning
is the fly in breakfast, which results in heavy traffic if the weather is good. Also
there will be glider, helicopter, and biplane rides going on all day, as well as an
air show on Saturday afternoon, during which time, the airport will be closed. The
CAF will also have their B-25 WWII bomber on display, and will be putting on flight
demonstrations with it as well. He will call me again in a couple weeks for an update
on the club’s participation. He needs to get authorization and waivers lined up with
the FAA for the event soon.

I was also asked by Scott Blixt that we discuss our meeting time. His work schedule
won’t allow him to make our meetings the next couple months with the current 1pm
starting time. He’s working 6am - 2pm the next 3 months. He noticed the airport
directory shows the FBO open later, starting in May, so maybe we can return to 2 - 4
pm from May thru the summer.

    Meet the FAA:

I have been in contact with the local FAA office about the possibility of having an
FAA representative attend one of our meetings for a “Meet the FAA” session, in which
we can ask any questions concerning ultralights and light sport aircraft. There have
been questions in the past concerning “what if?”, “What equipment do I need?”, “Do I
need a transponder?”, etc. I thought if the FAA could attend for such a session, it
would be a good subject for a meeting, and attract more people to the meetings. I
received an e-mail reply from Michael Legler, Aviation Safety Inspector. He said he
would be able to attend our May meeting. He also said that the FAASTeam is planning
to hold a Light Sport Aircraft seminar in the twin cities area sometime this summer.
He will let me know more info, when it’s available. Let’s plan ahead for next month,
to have a very informative meeting!

    Meeting subjects:

If anyone has any ideas they’d like to see for future meeting subjects, let Scott of
I know, and we’ll see what we can do….Or take the reigns yourself, and arrange
something of interest for a meeting, and let me know ahead of time, so it can be
included in the newsletter. Also, “show and tell” is always appreciated at the
meetings. If you have any photos, helpful hints, etc. bring them to the meetings.

    Pennzoil 2 cycle oil:

Scott reported that he heard on UltraFlight Radio, that Pennzoil has been bought out
by Shell Oil Company. The Pennzoil 4130 oil for air cooled engines will no longer be
produced. When the current supply is exhausted, there won’t be any more. He called
Como Oil and Lube in Hugo and was told all they have is the 8 oz. bottles, and they
can’t get anymore. If you use this oil in your ultralight, you better stock up if you
can find some, or find an alternative oil.

    Hi all,
I received an e-mail today, confirming that Michael Legler, FAA Aviation Safety
Inspector will attend our May 11 meeting. 2pm - 4pm a the Faribault airport
conference room. He is planning to answer any questions people have concerning
ultralight and Light Sport Aircraft. Lets have a good turnout, and be prepared with
    lots of questions.

      See you there,
      Mike Schweim
MAY 2008

    UPCOMING EVENTS:

May 11 Lite Flyers meeting. 2pm, Faribault airport

May 24 Gary Ries fly in. Chicken dinner. 7965 East 190 TH St. Hastings, MN GPS: 44
    40.409 N
    92 56.474 W

    April Meeting notes:

We had 9 members and 2 guests in attendance at the meeting. Richard Schulz, and Brad
Frago were in attendance. Richard is the Faribault Airfest Board Chairman, and Brad
is in charge of the educational event with the area school kids at the event. Richard
talked to the members about our involvement with the Faribault Airfest, coming up in
September. He wants to officially “reintroduce” ultralight aircraft into the event,
as he feels the event should represent all forms of aviation activity. We discussed
the possibility of allowing ultralight flight demonstrations. Due to the mix of other
aircraft activity, it won’t work to have ultralights flying the pattern all day like
in years past. He did think it would work to allow flights Friday and Saturday
evening, after the balloons launched, and Saturday morning, after the balloon launch,
before the fly in breakfast traffic.

    Meet the FAA:

I received an e-mail from Michael Legler, from the FAA, confirming that he will be in
attendance at our May meeting. It will be a “Meet The FAA” session. Members and
visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions concerning ultralight and Light
Sport aircraft, and have them answered. Pass the word around, and lets have a well
    attended, informative meeting.

    Meeting subjects:

If anyone has any ideas they’d like to see for future meeting subjects, let Scott or
I know, and we’ll see what we can do….Or take the reigns yourself, and arrange
something of interest for a meeting, and let me know ahead of time, so it can be
included in the newsletter. Also, “show and tell” is always appreciated at the
meetings. If you have any photos, helpful hints, etc. bring them to the meetings.

    Hy-Vee Display:

A couple weeks ago, Richard Schulz contacted me, asking if we’d consider setting up a
display promoting the Airfest, our club, and ultralight aircraft at the Faribault
Hy-Vee store on May 3,4. Hy-Vee is one of the sponsors of Airfest. I sent out e-mails
to the members. Del Voegele trailered his Fisher FP404 biplane to the store, and set
it up inside the store, in front of the bakery department. We also set up a table
with handouts on the club, EAA information, etc. I also prepared several DVD’s with
ultralight related videos, and past balloon rallys, that were played on a TV. The
Faribault Daily News interviewed Del and Richard and printed a good story in Saturday’s
paper, promoting ultralights, Airfest, and the club. Del and I manned the display
Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning and early afternoon.

    May Meeting notes:

We had an informative meeting. Michael Legler, FAA Safety inspector attended our
meeting to answer questions concerning ultralights and light sport aircraft.
Unfortunately, we had a pretty low turnout, with only 6 members present. He reported
that FAA headquarters in Oklahoma City doesn’t keep the local officials informed on
what’s going on. I think he learned a lot from our members. He said your biggest
enemy is your neighbors. The FAA office doesn’t have the manpower to go around
searching for illegal aircraft operations. However, if someone calls the FAA with a
complaint, they are required to investigate. Avoid flying over houses, pastures,
barns, etc, and there’s a good chance you won’t have an unpleasant visit with the
    FAA.

Also, if anyone has anything they’d like to share in the newsletter, send it to me,
    and I’ll include it.

    Ray Seifert fly in / drive in picnic;

Ray Seifert announced at the May meeting that he’s planning to hold a picnic, fly in
/ drive in at his home, west of New Ulm, MN on Sunday, July 6. He held a fly in,
picnic at his home a couple years ago, and it was a good time, although it was too
windy for many to fly. Hopefully we’ll have good weather this year. 1400 ft. grass

    July Meeting notes:

We had a wonderful time at Ray’s picnic, with beautiful weather. Threats of area
storms kept many from flying to the event though. There were 3 aircraft a the event,
and plenty of food to go around. The rain/storms held off till the drive home.

Also, “show and tell” is always appreciated at the
meetings. If you have any photos, helpful hints, ideas to increase meeting attendance
etc. bring them to the meetings.

Also, if anyone has anything they’d like to share in the newsletter, send it to me,
    and I’ll include it.

    Faribault Airfest:

September 12, 13 is the Faribault airfest. The latest information I received sounded
like we’ll be permitted to have ultralight flight demonstrations Friday evening,
Saturday morning, and Saturday evening, after the balloon launches. I received
information and magazine samples to pass out from EAA and ASC. Lets have a good
turnout from club members at this year’s event to promote our club.

SEPTEMBER 2008
    UPCOMING EVENTS:

    Sept. 12, 13 Faribault Airfest….see below

Sept. 13 Lite Flyer’s meeting….NOTE CHANGE IN MEETING DATE!

    August Meeting notes:

We had 9 members in attendance at our August meeting. Conversations revolved around
Jewel’s upcoming Cherry Grove fly in, and the Faribault Airfest, and several member’s visits to Airventure 08.

    Cherry Grove Fly in:

Sunday afternoon, August 31 was Jewel Ness’s annual fly in/ drive in picnic. The wind
kept a lot of aircraft away, but there was still a good turnout of people, antique cars, and
several planes, including a 2 seat Quicksilver who braved the winds, providing introductory flights
to many people. Tim Bjork flew in with his beautiful Kolb. He arrived before the high winds,
and spent the day, hoping for the winds to die down before flying back home again.

    Faribault Airfest:

September 12, 13 is the Faribault airfest. We will be permitted to have ultralight
flight demonstrations Friday evening, Saturday morning, and Saturday evening, to cooincide
with the balloon launches. I received information and magazine samples to pass out from EAA and ASC, and am planning to have a table set up with the display. I’m planning to have my Weedhopper displayed in the grass, along the crowd line, near the grass runway, where it can get exposure to the public, while being protected from people. As the Airfest is the same weekend as
our normally scheduled meeting, There WILL NOT be a meeting on Sunday. We will plan to
meet at Airfest on Saturday instead, at the ultralight display. It has been requested that anyone planning to fly their ultralights to the event arrive early in the morning, to avoid congestion. Saturday morning, from 7am till noon is the FAPA fly in pancake breakfast. PIC’s eat free. The
daytime hours are expected to be busy. There will be GA rides, helicopter rides, glider rides, biplane rides going on all day, as well as flights by the CAF’s B-25 WWII bomber.
Also, there will  be aerobatic airplane demonstrations at noon and 3pm Saturday. I will be there all day Friday and
Saturday. Friday morning, at 8am is the kids education day, with 2 groups of area 6th graders
visiting the airport to meet the pilots. If you’d like to have your aircraft available for the
kids to see, you’re welcome to attend and help out. The first group arrives at 8:20am, the second group
is scheduled to arrive at 9:20am. Airfest officially starts at 5pm Friday, with a balloon launch
scheduled for 5:30. The band “Mr. Peabody” will be performing in the main hangar from 7 till 11pm.
Admission to Airfest is $7/person, parking is free. The Airfest website is at:
www.faribaultairfest.com , with more information, and schedule of events. Lets have a good turnout from club members
at this year’s event to promote our club.

EMEMBER, HAVE FUN, AND FLY SAFE!

OCTOBER 2008
    UPCOMING EVENTS:

    Oct 12 Lite Flyers meeting

    September Meeting notes:

We didn’t have our normal meeting in September. We had planned to meet at the
Faribault Airfest, Saturday afternoon instead. There were 5 members in attendance at the
Airfest on Saturday. The weather didn’t cooperate for flying events on Saturday. It ranged from
a light mist to heavy rains all day long, with overcast skys varying from 300 ft. to 700 ft.

    Faribault Airfest:

September 12, 13 was the 24th annual Faribault Area Airfest, airshow and balloon
rally. I arrived for the event around 7am Friday to set up my Weedhopper for the kid’s education day.
There were around 150 students from the Faribault middle school 6th grade classes that visited the airport to learn about the various forms of aviation activities taking place at the Airfest. Displays consisted of RC aircraft, balloons, gliders, ultralight, and antique aircraft. During the talks to the second group of kids, their attention was diverted away from the planned talks,as the St. Paul CAF’s B-25 bomber made a fly by, landed, and parked on the ramp. Friday had beautiful weather all day, with clear skys, and light breeze. The airport was closed from noon till 4pm for aerobatic practice flights, and media displays. The event officially opened at 5pm, with a mass balloon launch of 17 balloons at 5:30. Del Voegele, and Scott Blixt flew in late Friday afternoon to watch the balloon launch..Because there was an FAA waiver for the airshow, the FAA was in attendance, with 4 or 5 people.
One of them checked out Del’s Fisher biplane ultralight in the form of a ramp check. Fortunately, the FAA inspector determined that it is an ultralight, and no further action resulted.
After the balloons launched, Del flew home, and Scott flew the ultralight pattern for the spectators, before chasing balloons and heading for home. I took off in my Weedhopper and followed the balloons about 5 miles downwind, circled the balloons, and returned to fly the pattern for about ½ hr. I camped on the airport next to one of the hangars. Saturday morning, I woke up to heavy fog, with visibility of only a couple hundred feet. No flying took place on Saturday due to low clouds, and rain. (there was no wind though) I was interviewed in the main hangar about ultralights, and our club for the event’s “speaker’s forum” for about 20 minutes. Around 4pm, I went in the office to check the radar. As I was walking out, the wind suddenly came up to 10 kts, gusting to 15. The wind blew my Weedhopper up on the prop and 1 wingtip. Luckily, there was no major damage, just a scuffed prop tip, and a small hole in the wingtip fabric. Scott was there at the ultralight display, and helped me tie it down, and disassemble it. Other than the bad weather on Saturday, it was a successful event, and Dick Schulz thanked us for participating. He also asked us to participate again next year. He said that next year, members who attend the event will be provided free admission passes.

The following is an e-mail I received from Dick after the event:

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for being such a good participant in Airfest 2008. I know things could've been a lot better without the inclement weather. I do think our interview on stage went fairly well and would like to do it again next year. I would also like to have the Ultra-Light guys put together a presentation that we could present to folks on stage. I'm sorry for the guys from the Club who came to help and got rained out. Next year, any club members who want to help with the displays or presentation will be able to get a pass to come in for free.
Finally, thanks again for the photos attached to your last email. I see if I can't work them into the mix somehow. I look forward to working with you again next year.

    Cheers,

    Dick

REMEMBER, HAVE FUN, AND FLY SAFE!

NOVEMBER 2008

cartographer himself, Richard Neher, from the Aeronautical Charting Office in Washington, D.C. Whether you
use paper charts, GPS, MFD or EFB after this program you will look down at the earth in a whole new
    way.

The seminar is good for 1 credit in the FAA Wings program.

    November Meeting notes:

We had 5 members in attendance for our November meeting. I showed those in attendance
a photo of Scott Blixt’s prop hub. During a preflight inspection, he found 1 half of
    his UltraProp hub was cracked.

    HI Gang:

Its EAA club renewal time as well as our own club dues renewal. Its
also a time for decideing the future of the club.

We origanlly became an EAA chapter for the Insurance so we could meet
out at Mark Bauers farm. It was a bit less expensive then. The cost
of our EAA dues has gotten quite high, just to be an EAA chapter. It
would save us quite a bit of money to drop the affliation. This is
something you guys can talk about at the DEC meeting. It has to be
decided at this meeting though as the renewal papers have to be in
the mail soon after the meeting.

If you do decide to stay with EAA, then we will need everyones
current EAA member number and exp date. Its on your EAA membership
card. Bob needs this for the club renewal app

Also, please pay your dues for 2009 at the next meeting or thru the
    mail to Bob Powell.

Unless of course you all decide you dont want the club anymore.
Attendance has been quite small now for many months. I know guys are
busy, plus quite a few of you live a distance away. But its our club
and it will carry on if you all want it too. Its only as good as we
all make it. Please come to meetings with your stories and ideas. And
anything you want to show off or share with the group. Mike and I
    cant do it all.

Ive been looking at my work sked for 2009 and I see Im gonna be
working quite a few sundays this next year. Its not fair to Mike or
the group to carry on as club president if I cant be there on a
regular basis. Im willing to stay on as pres, but someone would have
to carry the meetings in my absense. Otherwise, im willing to step
aside and let Mike or anyone else to carry on in 2009 and beyond. I
try and trade my shifts at work to get weekends off, but that doesnt
    always work out.

So, what do you all think? Do we keep the club going? Do we stay with
EAA? Will someone take over as President? SHow up at the Dec meeting
    and figure it out

And due to work, I wont be able to attend. The future is in your
hands. And would someone please let me know how it went ;-)

    Fly safe, fly often
