    DECEMBER MEETING:

We had 8 members in attendance for the December meeting. It was our first meeting at the Faribault airport meeting room, and went pretty well. The meeting broke up around 4pm when their employee had to lock up to close for the day. Talk centered around members’ flying experiences. Dan Westerhouse passed around photos of his Ridge Runner. He hasn’t flown it as of the Dec. meeting as he’s waiting for perfect flying conditions before he takes it up.

    JANUARY MEETING:

Our annual holiday party will take the place of the January meeting. It will be a pot luck supper at my home. Plan to eat around 6pm. Feel free to come earlier if you wish. I have a few aviation movies, and aviation oriented video I’ve taken over the past year. Bring your spouse, significant other, or a friend, and a dish to pass. Directions are included with this newsletter. Hope to see everyone here.

    WEEDHOPPER UPDATE:

My Weedhopper still hasn’t flown with its “new” Rotax 377 engine, but hopefully will soon. I made a set of skis for it, based on an article I found on the internet. I used 3 kid’s snow boards for the skis, and made pine and plywood attach brackets. I also made and installed a windshield for it. It now has a couple hours logged as a snowmobile, traveling around the neighbors field.

    JANUARY MEETING:

3 members showed up for our annual holiday party. It was a pot luck supper, held at my home. There was lots of good food to go around. I showed a video of my Weedhopper’s first flight since modifications.

    WEEDHOPPER UPDATE:

My Weedhopper has finally flown! As printed in the last newsletter, I made a set of skis for it, and had played “snowmobile” over the Christmas/ New Year’s holidays. January 7 the weather finally cooperated, and the Weedhopper went airborne for the first time since Oct. 04. We had no wind, and 34 degree temps. It’s a whole new machine with the new engine, and lots more fun to fly! I still have some fine tuning to do, as it requires some up elevator pressure, and a fair amount of right rudder pressure to hold straight and level flight. Take off distance is about half what it had been. The first takeoff was measured at 90 ft. The second at 70 ft. Cruise speed was 50 mph at 5000 rpm (verified by gps), and it now climbs like a “homesick angel” compared to the old engine. I flew out of a 1200 ft. field, and was at 300 ft. by the end of the field. In the past, I’d been just above the tree tops at the end of the field.

    NEW WEB GROUP:

I started an e-mail group for the club. It’s a Yahoo group, allowing members to send and receive messages between group members. I have placed several photos of member’s planes, web links, and the last couple newsletters in PDF format on the group’s home page. PDF format allows viewers to see the newsletter in the same format viewers of the printed version see it. There is no cost to join the group, and there is no cost to the club to have the group. To join the group, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EAAUL66 membership will have to be approved by me, to try to keep spammers out of the group. The group is not intended to replace the club website that Del Voegele maintains for the club. Even if you choose not to use the group’s chat function, there’s useful information on the group’s page for the use of the members. You can choose to receive any messages as individual e-mails, daily digest of all e-mails for the day, or no e-mail (message access thru the website). You can also add your own photos, short movie clips, etc. Please keep all group submissions ultralight aircraft oriented.

    FEBRUARY MEETING:

The February meeting was attended by 6 members. Discussion was mostly centered around the Sport Pilot rules, and upcoming Sport Pilot seminar in Woodbury, MN. If you are a registered ultralight pilot thru EAA, USUA, or ASC and want to upgrade to Sport Pilot, time is running out. Jan 31, 2007 (10 months from now) is the deadline to get credit for being an ultralight pilot if you upgrade to Sport Pilot. After that date, you will need to get all the required training for Sport Pilot the same as people with no flight experience.

    MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS:

Please get your 2006 membership renewals sent in if you haven’t already done so! Scott has informed me that so far, 11 members have renewed for 06. Please include your name, address, e-mail, phone#, EAA# and EAA expiration date with your renewals so we can keep the

    records up to date.

    NEW WEB GROUP:

There hasn’t been much activity on the new Yahoo group for the club. I’ve added more info to the site that should benefit members, such as pictorial guide to spark plug readings, links to Rotax engine maintenance information, etc. I’ve also been adding photos from past events that club members have participated in. To join the group, go to:

    SPORT PILOT SEMINAR REPORT:

March 2006
Scott Blixt attended the sport pilot seminar in Woodbury and e-mailed the following report: Instead of braving the nice winter day and flying up to Forest Lake, I decided to stay in and attend Dons SP class in Lake Elmo. It was a good turnout. 33 people signed up. The room was full. People from all over the state and then some. A few folks from the Dakotas even. Our guest and instructor was Jim Bair from SE WI. He has quite a background in aviation from fighter jets to 777s. He went over just about every aspect of what he, as an DPE, will be looking for when you go to take the PTS with him. There is a lot to know and I think having this class with him helped out quite a bit. There is no doubt, SP is gonna cost us some money and time. Getting the ticket is the first step. But things like annuals for your plane and BFR for you as a pilot. Especially with a lack of SP CFI’s to do this with. And the need for transponders on any plane with electric start inside the mode C veil around the twin cities. They cost well over $1200! I’m still trying to digest all the info that was crammed into my head this weekend. A lot of food for thought on the whole SP process. It was a good education.

    SAD NEWS:

I received the following report from the EAA UL 12 Yahoo group….fortunately there were no injuries or loss of life.

Jewell Ness lost his shop to a fire at 2 AM Sunday, February 26. He lost his two projects that he had been working on for years, that were close to being completed. Everything in the shop was a loss, even an engine was melted down. I am sure he appreciates fellow pilot's to show their concern. I hope this year's Fly-In is the Biggest and gives him a lot of support and enjoyment …..Tom Dunlap

    for more info)

Apr 29 Builders Day, Sioux Falls, SD area….see below.

    MARCH MEETING:

There were 8 members in attendance at the March meeting. Scott Blixt reported on the Sport Pilot seminar he attended, and on the Wisconsin ultralight safety seminar he also attended. He reported that this year’s seminar was one of the best they’ve had. If you register your aircraft as an LSA or experimental and it has an electrical system, you need a transponder and altitude encoder to operate within the 30 mile veil surrounding Minneapolis International Airport. According to information from EAA, If you have a battery charged by your aircraft’s engine, you have an electrical system. As long as your battery isn’t charged by the engine you’re not considered to have an electrical system. Also, 2 seat fixed wing aircraft require an ELT. Due to an oversight by FAA when the Sport Pilot rules were written, weight shift and powered parachutes aren’t required to have an ELT.

    WEEDHOPPER UPDATE:

The Weedhopper was flown again March 29. It was the last chance to fly on skis, as the new snow had already melted quite a bit. I got about an hour’s flying time in, and several takeoff’s and landings. Takeoff distance was pretty consistent at 60 ft. I’ve since removed the skis, and reinstalled the wheels in preparation for spring/summer flying season. I also purchased a newer set of sails. I got the tail sails installed, and will install the wing sails next time I fly. Full power, level flight speed was around 55 mph, cruise around 45 with the new engine.

    WANTED:
Articles, building reports, flying reports, etc. for YOUR newsletter! Remember, It’s
your club, your newsletter, so get involved. Everyone shouldn’t have to read about
what I’ve been doing every month. Let us know what you’re doing as well. If you’ve

Dan Westerhouse is still waiting for suitable weather for his first flight in his Ridge Runner.

Tim Bjork is also waiting for suitable weather to fly his new Kolb.

Ray Seifert brought along his plans and a video showing the construction of the Zenair CH601 he's building.

    SUPERIOR ANTENNA:

I received notice from a member of the Weedhopper e-mail list of a really good aircraft radio antenna. He reported he can clearly transmit to and receive from aircraft over 100 miles away, and that no ground plane is required. He says it’s the perfect antenna for ultralight aircraft. It was designed to be used in Challenger ultralights. Just secure it inside the nose cone. He mounted his antenna inside the wing of his Weedhopper, tie wrapped to one of the brace tubes. Here’s a link to this antenna:

There were 6 members in attendance at the June meeting. Conversation mostly consisted of Sport Pilot regulations. Tim Bjork has flown his new Kolb Firestar. He reported that it jumped into the air a lot faster than he expected. He had some photos of it in flight, and it looks beautiful.

    WANTED!!!!

Your stories, photos, etc. to be published in the newsletter for your fellow ultralight enthusiasts enjoyment! Also, attendance has been very poor the last several meetings. Our president, Scott Blixt reported that he’s heard that more people would attend if there was some kind of educational program to go with the meeting. If you have any ideas for meeting topics, or know of someone who would be willing to be a speaker at an upcoming meeting, let Scott know so something can be scheduled.

    JULY MEETING AGENDA:

Barb Mack, Designated Sport Pilot Examiner has agreed to attend our July meeting. She will answer your questions about getting your Sport Pilot’s license. We would like to see a good turnout for the meeting. Bring any questions you have about Sport Pilot and Barb will do her best to answer them. If the weather is good, feel free to fly in to the Faribault airport…Keep your eyes open for glider activity if you fly in, as if the weather is good, the gliders will be airborne. The grass runway is available, or you can land on the grass along the terminal side of the main runway. If it is raining, Barb will not make it, as she’s flying down from the North side of the cities.

    NEW PILOTS:
Dan Westerhouse and Scott Blixt have recently made it to full fledged SP. It was some work, but it wasn’t
all that bad. The deadline is only 7 months away. There is still time, but get going before its too late. Otherwise the free ticket you have will go away. The so called grandfather clause allows you to transition without any training or sign offs from a CFI. I’m sure Scott and Dan will have some insight to report to the members at the meeting.

    WEEDHOPPER UPDATE:

I finally had a chance to fly the Weedhopper with the new sails, and it flys great!! Gets off the ground in no time, and easily made it to 300 ft altitude before reaching the end of the 1800 ft. strip I fly out of. I also had no problem maintaining 45-50 mph. With the old engine, top speed on a good day was 40-45.

    JULY MEETING:

We had really good attendance for the July meeting. It featured Barb Mack, designated Sport Pilot examiner. She told about the Sport Pilot regulations, and answered many questions about Sport Pilot. To those of you that didn’t make it, you missed a good meeting. I know some of you are sick of hearing about SP. Its not going away guys. Its here to stay like it or not. Now its up to us. Hop on board or ignore it. Part 103 is still here and yes, we are still a UL club.

    WANTED:
Your stories, photos, etc. to be published in the newsletter for your fellow ultralight enthusiasts enjoyment! If you have any ideas for meeting topics, or know of someone who would be willing to be a speaker at an upcoming meeting, let Scott know so something can be scheduled.

    AUGUST MEETING AGENDA:

Scott Blixt is going to give a presentation on airspace. One of the biggest concerns pilots have with ultralights, is airspace violations. He will have some AOPA hand outs explaining airspace rules.

I have been in contact with the Faribault balloon rally committee, and they have agreed to allow us to participate in this year’s event. I feel participation in the event is a good way to promote our sport, and to educate the public about ultralight aviation.

FARIBAULT BALLOON RALLY AND AIR FEST:

As noted above, Sept. 15-17 is the annual Faribault Balloon Rally and Air Fest, held at the Faribault airport. As in the past 4 or 5 years, I have agreed to speak to the local 6th grade school students about ultralights from 8:45 -11:15am Friday morning at the Faribault airport. I have also been asked if someone would be willing to give a 30 minute talk about ultralights Saturday as part of the Air Fest speaker’s forums. The event coordinator has been in contact with Jerry Serres, airport manager about our club’s participation. He has agreed to allow us to have an ultralight display at the airport, and to provide flying demonstrations Saturday from noon to 1pm, weather permitting. There’s an air show scheduled beginning at 1pm with aerobatic demonstrations and sky diving. I’m hoping to also get the ok to have ultralight flying in the evening, between the hot air balloon launch and set up for the balloon night glow. I was informed that anyone who flys as part of the demonstration flights must follow the prescribed flight pattern, and fly in a safe, professional manner. Also, it was requested that if at all possible aircraft radios should be used so other pilots can be kept up to date on what to expect of the ultralights. I was told that if all goes well this year, with no conflicts, there’s a good chance we could have more flight privileges at future events. If anyone is interested in speaking at the forum, or helping with the kid’s day, please contact me ASAP, as the airfest committed is preparing their event programs, and they will be printed very shortly.

    WINGS AND WHEELS:

Jim Hansen, Albert Lea airport manager is sponsoring Wings and Wheels day with fly in breakfast at the airport Sunday Aug 13 from 7am till noon. He’s hoping to get at least 20 ultralights to participate. He’s willing to provide FREE GAS to those who fly in and display their ultralights. If anyone is interested in flying down, it sounds like a fun time.

    AUGUST MEETING:

We had 8 members in attendance for the August meeting. We had reports from a few members who had attended the Oshkosh convention this year. I also reported on my visit to Don Zank’s fly in at Bloomer, WI. We had good weather for the Bloomer fly in, with around 80 planes in attendance. I got to fly a few times there, and accumulated about an hour’s flight time on my Weedhopper while there. Scott Blixt gave a presentation on airspace types, and where we can and can’t fly. It was an informative presentation, with handouts from AOPA.

    WANTED:
Your stories, photos, etc. to be published in the newsletter for your fellow ultralight enthusiasts enjoyment! If you have any ideas for meeting topics, or know of someone who would be willing to be a speaker at an upcoming meeting, let Scott know so something can be scheduled.

    SEPTEMBER MEETING AGENDA:

Our club treasurer, Bob Powell is training for his Sport Pilot’s license at Airlake airport in Lakeville in their Flight Design CT aircraft. He reported that Franco Fiorillo, owner of Aircraft Resource Center at Airlake will be attending our September meeting to talk about Sport Pilot training at AirLake, and to answer questions about the Sport Pilot’s license. Weather permitting, he will be flying their CT to our meeting. For more information about Aircraft Resource Center, they have a website at www.gotoarc.net

    FARIBAULT BALLOON RALLY AND AIRFEST:

As noted above, September 15-17 is the annual balloon rally and airfest at the Faribault airport. We’ve been invited to participate in this year’s event with a static display of ultralight aircraft, with flight demonstrations from noon to 1pm on Saturday. As in the past 5 years, I’ll be participating in the event, talking to the school kids on Friday morning, and spending the weekend with my Weedhopper. They’re having their pancake breakfast on Saturday from 7 - 11:30 am. Free to PIC. Come spend the day and help promote our sport. I was told that if everything works out, and there are no conflicts this year, we may be able to get a longer, or more flying times in future years. It was requested that anyone who participates, have and use an air band radio so other aircraft know our positions and our intentions. Aircraft must remain in the specified ultralight traffic pattern during the flight demonstrations.

    JEWEL NESS FLY IN:

Once again Jewel was blessed with perfect weather for his annual fly in. If you didn’t make it, you missed the best fly in of the summer. It’s a MUST ATTEND event! He had live music. The Fox Lunch Wagon was there again, this year with 2 trailers. Also another trailer selling pop and popcorn. We didn’t have to wait in long lines for food this year. I received an e-mail from Jewel’s son, Denny, saying they had over 80 planes registered, and over 600 people in attendance. There are many photos from the event on the event website at www.theflyin.com .

He reported that he’s waiting till he gets insurance on it before he begins flying it. Scott Blixt also got his trike inspected and licensed as a Light Sport Aircraft. Bob Powell is training with Aircraft Resource Center out of Airlake Airport in Lakeville toward his Sport Pilot’s license, flying their Flight Design CT aircraft. He says it’s a really nice flying airplane. I brought along a clock I made, with a photo of my Weedhopper laser etched on a CD. Custom clocks available for $20. Need a clear photo of the aircraft you want pictured, digital preferred, uncluttered background. Sky preferred, as background must be removed from photo.

CLUB FUTURE, An important message from our president! :

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit since our last meeting. And it has also raised its head with the MUA club up in the cities. What is the future of our club?
The city club is also having trouble with folks showing up and participating in club meetings. We are not alone. Maybe it has run its course?
I asked this same question about this time last year and was surprised by the response. Guys came out of the woodwork to rally the club and voted strongly to continue on.
But after that meeting, we were right back to where we had been. The same 5 or 6 guys show up on a regular basis, Sometimes less. The last meeting had 6 of us and that was after a couple of stragglers came in 40 minutes late.
I’ve asked for ideas for meeting content. No one sent me any. I tried a couple of times to bring something to the table. I had some success with that.
For any club to survive, it needs participation. And our club doesn’t really have this. Some are sick to death of Sport Pilot. I apologize. Its been my goal since last Feb and I have completed it. Done deal.
So, what is our future? Club elections are upon us and we haven’t had enough folks show up to talk about it. Our club renewal is coming up soon with EAA. This has to be back in their hands in Dec.
So think about this and come to the NOV meeting and we can decide what we want to do.
We can let the club go and lay it to rest.
    We can carry on.
Even without a club we could still have our club’s internet forum to share our ideas and put together gatherings. They just wouldn’t be official EAA UL 66 functions anymore.
Either way, we will make a decision at the NOV meeting. With or without you.
    Scott Blixt
    President, EAA UL #66

    SPORT PILOT MAINTENANCE CLASS REPORT:
We wrapped up Oct. 15 about 5 PM. Only 14 of the original 16 were able to make it. A walk in brought it to 15. And I’m happy to say, all who attended passed the class.
Sat was all classroom. It made for a long day as we had cramped quarters for such a large group. No one complained too much and we made do.
Mike Huffman from MO was top notch. He was very knowledgeable. His presentation was well organized and he kept the class moving at a good pace. There was a lot of info that he needed to pass along to meet the FAA requirements.
Sun started with more class work and after the lunch break, we did hands on training for a few hours.
At the end we had a 50 question test that had to be passed with at least 80% correct. And as I already mentioned, all 15 passed!
Id like to pass along my thanks to all of you that attended. And thank you for putting up with the cramped room for 16 hours. Mike complimented our group as being attentive and dedicated to the course. He liked the fact that everyone took notes. Something he does not see usually.
And a huge thank you to Jerry Serres at the Faribault MN airport. He was kind enough to allow us use of the meeting room for the weekend
    Thanks again and good luck

    NOVEMBER MEETING:

There were 7 people in attendance at our November meeting, 6 members, and 1 visitor, who joined our club at the meeting. Our newest member is Dave Crow, from Waterville. He owns a Piper Tri Pacer, and is building a Protec PT-2 experimental aircraft, that he purchased partially completed. He has his own private strip on his farm. Welcome to the group Dave! The members in attendance voted to keep the club going. If anyone has ideas to increase meeting attendance, please let Scott or I know!

    DECEMBER MEETING AGENDA:

I received an e-mail from Bob Powell concerning this meeting. We’ve been invited to meet in the lobby of the Airlake Airport in Lakeville, MN for this meeting. One of LSA North’s Flight Design CT aircraft will be reserved for the club to see it. He’s hoping to have one of their instructors available to talk to us about their business, and what they have to offer for Sport Pilot training and Rotax engine service.

    HOLIDAY PARTY:

In past years, our club has had a holiday get together shortly after the holiday season. We used to get together at a Faribault area restaurant. The last 3 years, we had a pot luck supper at my home, South of Mankato. It’s a good time to get together with the members’ families (spouses have been invited to attend) and meet people some have never, or rarely met. Do we want to have a holiday get together again, and if so, what do we want to do…..Think about it, and bring your ideas to the meeting.

    DECEMBER MEETING:

We had a good turnout for the December meeting! 10 members were in attendance. There was some discussion on Sport Pilot deadlines. Remember, you have till Jan 31, 07 to transition from ultralight pilot to Sport Pilot if you were a registered ultralight pilot prior to Sept 04, and just want to take the written and flight tests. After the deadline, you must meet all the requirements of Sport Pilot. Also, Jan 31, 08 is the deadline to transition aircraft that don’t meet part 103 ultralight requirements to Light Sport Aircraft. After the deadline, they can’t be registered as Light Sport. We also got the opportunity to see LSA North’s Flight Design CT aircraft at AirLake. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet with anyone with LSA North, as the person who was scheduled to speak to us had suffered an illness.

There was also some discussion about the club’s annual holiday party. It was decided not to have a party this year. There were also comments made that perhaps the club should sponsor one or more fly in events to help increase members’ participation in the club.
